Tell Me About Yourself With Good Example Answer |
How to perfectly answer the "tell me about yourself" job interview question. Avoid THIS #1 mistake when answering this interview question.
This video uncovers 3 specific job interview tips when it comes to answering this tough interview question. The problem with the Tell me about yourself question is that it leaves things incredibly open ended and can lead job interviewees down a path that can lead to them being disqualified from the job within seconds!
It's no surprise so many people are always trying to figure just how they should be answering this question, after all it's one of the most common opening questions you'll face at an interview.
I know both Mike and I screwed up this question for years. As you'll see in the video, the interviewer doesn't care about your personal story. They're not interested in the fact that you grew up with a puppy named "Tex" and that you grew up in a sleepy town in Wisconsin...
They want to know about your specific work achievements and strengths! Job interview questions are all about discovering whether you can bring to the position, exactly what they're looking for in terms of abilities and qualities. Ones that are going to benefit the company you are interviewing with.
Here are some excerpts from the video:
Jeff's bad answer:
"Well, I'm from Seattle, Washington,
I enjoy mountain biking and cooking
and my favorite color is..."
Jeff's good answer:
Well, I've been in sales for the
last 5 years. My most recent
experience was in the retail
industry, where I was a manager at
the Comfy Shoe Company. I was
personally responsible for a 30%
increase in sales over the last
year. I'd say that my main
strength is my leadership ability,
which was evident in the way I
mentored my sales team to reach our
lofty goals. What I am looking for
is a company that values teamwork
and the group dynamic, where I can
join a strong team and have a
positive impact on the team dynamic
and sales revenue.
3 Tips to answering the Tell Me About Yourself question:
MIKE
There are three main points that
you need to remember when answering
this question...what's the first
one Jeff?
JEFF
Well, as you saw in my bad answer,
you absolutely DO NOT want to go on
and on about your personal life or
hobbies and interests.
MIKE
Which leads me to point number two.
You want to include specific work
achievements from your past in your
answer. But there's one final
trick right Jeff?
JEFF
That's right Mike. It is always a
good idea to mention your strengths
and abilities in your answer.
